Intro
It is really important to talk to your friend if you’re concerned that they might be struggling with their mental health. But how do you even know if they’re struggling?
It can be intimidating the first time that you talk to someone about their mental health. You might be worried that they might not take it well, or they might get defensive or angry. The most important thing to remember is to not judge and not make assumptions and the way that we do this is by saying what you see. So by this I mean, I had an experience where I had a friend who noticed that I was struggling with my mental health and they said, “Hey Charlotte, I noticed you haven’t been coming out with our friends as often as you usually do and that’s not really like you. Even if you asked that question and the person isn’t quite ready to talk yet, you’re at least making that space for them to come forward when they’re ready. And if they are angry or they do get defensive, just remember it’s not a personal thing. It’s just scary to talk about your mental health sometimes and they might not be ready.
