What If They Don’t Want Help?
As always, if it’s a crisis, call a crisis line, 9-1-1 or emergency services and stay with them until help arrives.
If it’s not a crisis, tell them again why you’re concerned and ask open ended questions to explore the barriers to seeking help. There are lots of reasons why someone might avoid getting professional help, so don’t make assumptions. Sometimes there are practical considerations like cost or time. There may also be reasons related to past experiences of being discriminated against, stigmatized, or disrespected by a healthcare worker.
Careful not to push too hard; it often does the opposite of what you hope. Try to understand the reason behind their resistance so you can find a solution together. Lots of people try a few different resources before they find what works for them. The important thing is to not give up.
